Ph.D. RESEARCH PROJECT:

Vortex-Induced vibrations of slender flexible structures of cylindrical cross section.

Ph.D. thesis manuscript (in french)

This research project has been conducted at Ecole Polytechnique in France at LadHyX (Laboratoire d’hydrodynamique de l’Ecole Polytechnique) under the supervision of prof. Emmanuel de Langre. It was financed by the French Petroleum Institute (IFP). In this project, we were interested in vortex-induced vibrations of slender flexible structures of circular cross section. More precisely, we were interested in modeling the physics of the phenomenon by a simple linear model. (more)

M.Sc.A. RESEARCH PROJECT

In-flow fluidelastic instabilities of tube bundles subjected to a two-phase flow.

This research project was conducted at Ecole Polytechnique de Montréal in Canada inside the BWC/AECL/NSERC industrial research chair of fluid and structure interaction under the supervision of prof. Michel J. Pettigrew. The purpose of this research was to verify experimentally if fluidelastic instability occurs for a cluster of cylinders preferentially flexible in the flow direction in two-phase (air-water) flow. It was found that fluidelastic instabilities do occur for such a cluster of tubes. This is of practical importance since, in nuclear power plant steam generator design, the flat bar supports installed  in order to restrain vibrations of the U-tubes in the out of plane direction are not as effective in restraining the in-plane vibrations of the tubes.
