What should tomorrow's drug-eluting stent look like ?

Why?

Stents are very commonly used today to re-open blood vessels that have been blocked du to atherosclerosis.

Re-blockage (re-stenosis) is a common problem of bare-metal stents.
Drug-releasing stents prevents this at the cost of increasing the risk of the formation of blood clots (thrombosis)

Our research aims at the creation of new stents that effectively avoid both restenosis and thrombosis.

How ?

Devising stents designs that optimize drug distribution in the arterial wall

Results

Drug concentration distributions
